Magic Egg Scale" manufactured by the National Poultry Equipment Company of Seatt
National Poultry
This object is a vintage poultry egg grading scale, specifically the Magic Egg Scale manufactured by the National Poultry Equipment Company of Seattle, Washington, dating back to the late 1930s or 1940s. Poultry farmers utilized these specialized tools to sort and grade individual eggs rapidly by weight (such as Small, Medium, Large, or Jumbo) to ensure uniform packaging and market compliance. Design Patent: The mechanical design was created by Ellis E. Powell and granted a U.S. Design Patent (Des. 105,970) on September 7, 1937. It features a cast aluminum beam body, steel knife-edge pivot bearings, and securing brass plates. Operation: An egg is placed into the ring-shaped cradle on the right. The balance counterweight on the left swings upward based on the weight of the egg to quickly indicate its exact grade or ounce-per-dozen classification.
